Top Twenty Cargo Tank Facility Violations - 2010

No surprise that 'Failing to include all required information on test/inspection report' is still the number one violation of cargo tank facilities. To see the latest updates look at http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/safety-security/hazmat/Top-Twenty-Cargo-Tank-Facility-Violations.aspx#2010

Polar receives lean approval

As we reported here first, Polar had asked US DOT for a special permit to use duplex stainless steel materials in an application earlier this year. Now it looks like they have received approval to use the material per a PHMSA special permit document. These materials are not normally authorized in for DOT400 series tanks in 178.345-2 materials of construction but Brenner had been given authority to use similar materials for their Lean Duplex product trailers. A link to the full permit is listed here http://phmsa.dot.gov/staticfiles/PHMSA/SPA_App/OfferDocuments/SP14573_2009090485.pdf

Polar embraces duplex-ity

Friday, June 18, 2010 - Matt Hazzard "Safety Sleuth"

It looks like Polar Tank Trailer of Holdingford, MN will be the next manufacture to incorporate the use of duplex stainless steel in DOT-400 series tank trailers. Permit application 14573-M, published in the Federal Register on May 28, 2010, noted Polar’s request to “authorize the use of an alternative duplex stainless steel” material. Following Brenner Tank LLC’s introduction of the idea some three years ago in an effort to out-run the vertically rising metal prices and with their second version now rolling out, Polar has given chase.

Mineta Transportation Institutes' Report States the Obvious

The recent research and findings report of the Mineta Transportation Institute for the Department of Homeland Security is 95 pages of industry known "...duh" information. If your fleet has a solid Security Plan with training and enforcement, you are likely well ahead of these findings. It still doesn't hurt to revisit this information and refresh some of the obvious information and you may even be reminded of something you have not been implementing.

If your drivers are conscience of their surroundings and practice treating your equipment like its their new Porsche (don't leave it unlocked while unattended, don't leave it running while unattended, keep a tight lip on their commodity and trip information, etc), you will make it less attractive for your tanker to be stolen and the hot story on all the local and cable news outlets.

You may be completely unaware of some of the little things that can cause problems with your tank and put you out of compliance. To be honest, there are many seasoned Registered Inspectors that do not pick up on some of these small items and pass tanks that are out of spec.
