Polar embraces duplex-ity

Friday, June 18, 2010 - Matt Hazzard "Safety Sleuth"

It looks like Polar Tank Trailer of Holdingford, MN will be the next manufacture to incorporate the use of duplex stainless steel in DOT-400 series tank trailers. Permit application 14573-M, published in the Federal Register on May 28, 2010, noted Polar’s request to “authorize the use of an alternative duplex stainless steel” material. Following Brenner Tank LLC’s introduction of the idea some three years ago in an effort to out-run the vertically rising metal prices and with their second version now rolling out, Polar has given chase.

Innovations to reduce weight and overhead have been at the forefront of many tank fleet operations. With EPA requirements increasing the light-weight of tractors, unstable fuel costs, and the ever-growing difficulty to produce profit, fleets have embraced many innovations over the last decade. These innovations include single tires, light weight air suspensions, integral frames, roll prevention technology, and aerodynamic attachments.

For tank carriers to continue to survive, they will have to be receptive to new ideas. They will need to look at weight savings in every corner to increase tonnage per trip, fuel saving technology and alternative fuels, automate processes where personnel could be more valuable elsewhere, and with every opportunity, squeeze out margin and secure longevity for their employees and share holders.
