NHTSA Preparing to Require Stability Control Systems on Tractors

8/18/2011  NHTSA Preparing to Require Stability Control Systems on Tractors
By Oliver B. Patton, Washington Editor

A pending federal proposal to require stability control systems on truck tractors is getting a mixed reaction from the trucking industry.

The proposal, scheduled to be published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the end of the year, would specify the details of a technology standard that that a growing number of fleets already have adopted voluntarily because they see safety benefits.

PHMSA extends comment period on 'outsource idea'.

The deadline for comments on the proposal to outsource rules development and regulation from PHMSA to the NBIC and ASME has been extended to May 23rd from its original March 23rd deadline. The regulations for both organizations are also available for review. At first glance, the regulation would require Registered Inspectors to purchase new expensive regulation books and enroll in online training, but this is open to changes in an often closed door discussion of rules, fees, and demands.

CSA materials now available at truck stops

Beginning today, January 12, 2011, CSA brochures and pocket cards for Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) drivers will be available at hundreds of travel centers across the country.  These materials provide important information to CMV drivers about the new CSA Safety Measurement System (SMS).  They will be available in “Info to Go” racks at large travel center chains, and in countertop containers at independent truck stops.

The pocket cards and brochures are also posted electronically on the CSA outreach website on the Outreach and Media page:  http://csa.fmcsa.dot.gov/outreach.aspx#factsheets  with instructions for printing.
